Ken Collier - Berry Boy's Boxing Club

My dad Ken Collier joined the club around 1948 when he was 10 years old and left when he was 16. Founder Fred Nunn was also dad’s ‘master’ when dad worked in the docks.

  • Does anybody remember Mathew Laudat and David O’Neil at this club in 1971/72?

  • Hi Michelle, l remember your dad as he used to live next to us in Powell Road in the early 60’s.
He was a lighter man on the Thames, as his dad was.
Ken got me interested in keeping and showing rabbits, Dagenham town show etc.
He was very kind and gentle and was always chatty, passing on all kinds of info.
What memories, my brother told me of this site.

  • Richard….I asked dad and he thinks it may have been taken at The Laindon Hotel pub, they had football matches there. Regards.

  • Michelle, Peter Hardcastle and your Dad Ken were really close friends, through primary and secondary schools. I believe they worked together, and maybe even did national service together. My brother David sent me a link to the photo. I cannot recall the occasion though. Regards

  • Michelle, in the photo of the boxers outside on a field, do you know where this was taken, or can you find out please, could it be one of the school playing fields in Laindon?

  • Michelle how pleased I was to see this photo, what memories it brought back. Do you know the other people in the photograph? I believe that the person in the centre is Peter Hardcastle and next to him is possibly my brother John Muncey. Can I send him a downloaded picture for confirmation? Thanks to people like Fred Nunn and your grandfather for the work they did.

  • I’m glad you like the photo! Unfortunately dad doesn’t remember anyone in the photo, but the name Hardcastle rings a bell to me! I remember going round to their house as a child!

Of course, feel free to download the pic.

  • My mistake, I thought you meant the second photo. In the top photo from left to right is my dad Ken Collier, ?? Chapman, Peter Hardcastle, John Muncey and Brian Markham.
