  • These young chaps were a few years older than I but I knew some of them — at least by sight. I wonder how many are still alive? They would be ninety or thereabouts I would guess. Alec Nuth attended Chelmsford Tech and lived, I think, on the north side of St Nicholas Lane between Pound Lane and Church Rd. His father ran the Regal Club in Pound Lane. There were several Whiskins around Laindon but I cannot remember a Bill. Billy Bedwell, in later years, was a founder of Green Lane table tennis club and was probably the best table tennis player in the area. I think he was involved in the Dagenham train crash. Terry Keeble was a good enough at football that he had a spell with West Ham Colts. Les Shepard was an all around good athlete and played virtually every sport. Sonny Barling lived on the corner of Berry Lane and Ferndale Ave. (the latter no longer exists) and could throw a cricket ball further than I ever believed possible. Bobby Rasmussen and Alf Sargeant I did not know. Peter Lucas attended Chelmsford Tech, lived (I think) on the west side of the B.1007 between the Fortune of War and the Old Fortune. Local author and a reporter for the Laindon Recorder, he and Les Shepard could be found involved in every sport. I think he retired and lived in Westcliff.I did not know Fred Taylor but I think he recently contributed to this site on a different matter, saying he had married Joan Bedford who lived on King Edward Terrace. Bert French I did not know. Reg Callow, in later years, played right back for the very successful Laindon team that played behind the Laindon Hotel during the 1950’s. (Where was the Spartans home ground? I cannot remember seeing them play although they were a well known team in the area.)

  • Bobby Rasmussen was my dad…I’ve never seen a team picture of him although we were told while growing up that he enjoyed playing a good standard of football. Lovely to see this picture of him. He sadly passed away when I was 18…he was only 53 years old. Would be lovely to see more if you have any.

  • The gentleman second from right is Joe Root the team’s First Aid man,  also an active member of the local St Johns Ambulance.  My great uncle.

The goal keeper is Bert French still alive and ‘kicking’ and living in Laindon.
