Tap Dancing

Jean Eable

By Carol Martin

Does anyone here remember the Jean Eable (not sure of spelling) tap dancing school, she used to teach in a hall on the Crown Hill side of the railway station. I attended there until around 1950, and can still remember some of the steps. I had a couple of solo numbers singing when we performed at the Memorial Hall etc.,  one was 'Christopher Robin is saying his Prayers' the other one was the 'Teddy Bears Picnic'. My maiden name was Stratford.

I too went to tap dancing lessons.  I can remember doing a show at the Memorial Hall.  We were all dressed as Hula Hula girls and danced to "Hula, Hula, Hula, I don't want to leave the jungle, oh no no no no no". I can still remember the actions which I've performed much to the hilarity of my nieces.  My aunt made me a raffia skirt and a lei of paper flowers.  There was also a piece where the dancers were dressed as bunnies and had to roll across the floor.  I wasn't in this as I couldn't roll straight!!
