Does anybody remember any of those in the Photo?
I recall a few names – Betty Sawyer, Olive Sawyer, Daisy Read, Peter Carter – and the lady on the end on the right with glasses Mrs Smith.
I am second on the right of the picture in the front row standing, my sister Joyce is fourth one in of the same row on the other side. Betty Sawyer is the first girl in that row with Peter Carter next to her.
The Party was in the large garden at the High Road end of Worthing Road.

This was in my then garden at No. 5 Worthing Road. Co-op and woodyard on the corners.
Does anyone remember the Houghton family or Peter and Rose Burk. Mrs Nelly Dean. They all lived in the prefabs on Victoria Road.
I remember the prefabs being built in 1946-7. They were the wonder of the age as they came all the way from the USA. and were of very thick “cardboard”. Off cuts were treasured by us kids, but my mother sniffed and said “Cardboard? They wont last 10 years!”
They were still going strong long after she died

Hello, I was chatting to my mum about this site other day and she told me my grandad lived in one of the prefab houses down Worthing Rd as a boy he moved from Bethnal Green his name was Lenard Baskett he had a sister Gladys and brother John just wondered if any of you knew him thanks?

I’ve been trying to contact Olive Sawyer, whom I knew when we were at Chelmsford Tec. and after we used to travel to work in London on the same train from Laindon. She married and I lost touch and her married name. I do know her husband had a motorbike and sidecar which they went away on honeymoon on.
You have commented that in the photo V.E party Worthing Road that Brenda Sawyer and her sister Olive Sawyer were on that photo. Do you know where they lived? Or have you any recolation of what became of Olive. I would dearly love to get in touch with her again.
Hi, Steve, your sister Pam is in the third row from the front, fourth from the right, but I cant see your brother, John. The large lady, second left in the top row was a Mrs Newman, who had a very large family
Hi, Heather, You are right, three of your aunts are there, but Beryl was at work. Betty is next door but one to your Gran (Mrs L F Norman) the lady next to her is Mrs James and Lily is five places to the left in the same row. If you look carefully you will find me hiding just in front of Betty (I had taken off my glasses as I hated them!) Aunty Mary
The lady who is 3rd from the right on about the 4th row is Lilian Norman, my Grandmother. I think 2 of my aunties are there as well but I would have to check that out
By the way the VE day party was in my as then garden at No 5 Worthing Road which backed onto the Manor Mission; on the east side of the garden was Buckinghams butcher, Worths Oil shop and the woodyard/sawyers yard on the SE corner.
The garage in the background my gran Edith Hollington used to rent out to local car owners!!!
The Norman family lived at No 7
My mum Alice White back left with me in her arms I am 2 years old,my nan Edith Hollington is second in on the right , third in back row is my aunt Mable Ellis Steve White 08-03-12
My brother and I do not seem to be in this Photo, I am a bit confused to the exact years that we lived there. But nor is Terry Clark, Corral and Gavin Hewitt and Carole Cooper and we all lived in the Prefabs together before we started school. So maybe the prefab kids were not involved in this party or perhaps we hadn’t moved in at that time.
The one I can remember is Mrs Smith, our prefab was opposite her wooden bungalow in Worthing Road. Even though I was very young I remember she was a very kind lady.
One christmas she gave me a little pinny, I recall, I spent every day smelling it as you did not get anything new, not then just after the war, and the new smell I remember as if it was yesterday was of faint oranges. This sweet kind lady I have never forgotten it’s so nice to see her and her name on site.
Editor: It is very unlikely that the prefabs had been built this soon after the war.
Hi Colin – yes we lived in what was the last property on the made-up part of Worthing Road – called “Bethune”- opposite the pre-fabs.
Hello David, did you and your sister live almost at the top of Worthing Rd (the made up bit) on the left opposite the prefabs. I lived in Railway Approach, you I and Martin Williams (son of school teacher Tom Williams) also of Railway App used to play together.
