I have memories of St.Nicholas from the beginning of the 1930’s as a member of the choir when we used to be paid one halpenny for each attendance. It was advisable to arrive early to get a decent surplice as some were past their ‘sell by’ date. One thing I never understood was that the Reverend Lake could faultlessly deliver his sermons, but when he spoke to you personally he had this impediment in his speech which caused a stutter. I always remembered him as a tall man, but this may have been because we were so small.
