Shooting Parties

Just after the railway came to Laindon and the “Plotlands” began to spread, London business men would travel down by train for shooting weekends. My grandfather would meet them at the station with his horse and cart and take them to their plotland homes. Early next day he would collect them and drive them down to Pitsea marsh where he would act as their wildfowling guide.

He was Fred Whitting who lived in Timberlog Lane, Vange. Later he became a coalman, still with his horse and cart and although from Vange he served Laindon.
