    By Robert Springate (05/02/2017)
  • No. 29 (Picture 9) is Peter Abbot lived in Vowler Road in one of a pair of houses on the left hand side. Further along the road, on the same side, a girl called Dale Roberts, lived in a bungalow. Apparently still living in Langdon Hills.

    By Robert Springate (05/02/2017)
  • Please note that No. 23 is not Ray Arthey.

    By Ray Arthey (05/12/2015)

Would like to get an email from anyone in the picture, like my friends Raymond Arthey and Alan Shotter

  • Gerald Almeroth-yes, John is Fred’s son. I’m John’s sister-in-law.

    By Tina Penson (12/03/2014)
  • Hi, I live in Denmark not Norway

    By Peter Riches (11/03/2014)
  • Hi why is it that my name is incorrectly spelt it is Muncey

Editor: I have corrected the spelling of you name.

    By David Muncey (25/12/2013)
  • Is Fred Penson the father of John, who I went to school with at Lincewood and Laindon High Road later in the 70’s? I think they lived in Emanuel Road, Langdon Hills and we went to Laindon 1st cub scouts in the same road!

    By Gerald Almeroth (15/09/2013)
  • No. 43 is Maureen Brown. After leaving school at 16 in 1956 I worked in the city until 1963. I have been married for 52 years and we returned to Vange in 1968. My favourite teacher was Mr Gay. It was lovely to see all the familiar faces from my youth although many of their names have been forgotten. I hope that one day all names will be posted. Maureen Redmond née Brown

  • Hi–I have just been looking at the 1956 photo. Found it by accident, but it is fascinating. I moved from Essex to Dorset in 1977 and am still working. I am MD of an engineering company in Poole. Colin Ginbey (no 7)

    By Colin Ginbey (21/02/2013)
  • 16 – I can confirm that this is Dave Muncie – good little boxer at this age

18 – is actually Peter Riches – he now lives in Norway ?

    By Mike Smith (17/12/2012)
  • Emma Thomas. Thank you for the reply. The last time I saw Maureen was in the mid 1960’s at Halstead, Essex. Alfie, I last saw a few years later. I would appreciate if you forward my email address to Maureen.

Editor: I have removed your email address so that you do not get spam email as a result of using the site and will forward it to Emma for onwards transmission.

  • Ronnie Pigram: Sorry for a delayed response but have only just seen these comments, Maureen is my Aunt, her sister Pat is my nan. It is correct Alf died, was about 1987 if I remember right, I was only young at the time, if you like I could pass your email address on to Maureen for you.

I saw her yesterday as she was in the area for a funeral today but is going back in the morning, she’s keeping really well and am sure she’d be happy to hear from some old friends x

  • Just heard from Freddie Penson re number 20 and he says: Yes that is Peter Sheehan, and the one the other side is Paul Corbett, and just behind Peter, is John Bailey.

    By Andrea (04/04/2012)
  • Anyone think 20 could be Peter Sheehan?

    By Andrea (03/04/2012)
  • 50 is Mary Young

    By P Rattenbury (02/04/2012)
  • I think 29 is Pete Abbott too, he’s also in the correct area for age.

    By Steve White (10/02/2012)

    By Steve White (09/02/2012)
  • 24 Raymond Arthey anyone confirm?

    By Steve White (09/02/2012)
  • The Query on 29 – all along I thought it was Peter Abbott but wasn’t 100% sure. We used to walk home together from Langdon Hills Primary School – I think he lived on the other side of the school somewhere like Vowler Road.

    By Andrea (09/02/2012)

  • Re query on (the late) Greg Smith – my cousin Carol (nee Pinnell) who was Head Girl, has written to me saying she seems to think he was in 5X with her and that they left in 1956.

    By Andrea (28/01/2012)
  • Im sure thats Greg Smith too, I remember him writing an article on running in the school magazine not long after I started in 55. I’m sure he was in 5X in 56 and left at the start of the summer holidays that year.

  • Hi Editor, Being one of the oldest in class I left earlier than most of my class mates. All the girls page 2 No.19 page 3 No.12 to 17 page 4 No.18 & the boys page 8 No.19, 20, 21. page 9 No.13. Were in my class.

    By albert Bedford (10/01/2012)
  • I feel sure that No 13 is Gregg Smith, would love to hear from him. Gregg was part of the crowd who worked in the city (London) when we all left school and we travelled on the trains each day. Gregg was on the train that night in 1958 that crashed into the one I was in, he came to where I was trapped and stayed with me all the time it took to free me and I was taken to hospital. Great Guy.

    By Jean Pattle (10/01/2012)
  • Hello Christine No.13 is definitely Greg Smith I was in the same class as Greg and your husband, if his name is Alan. I left at xmas 1954 but Greg and a few others stayed on for an extra year in what was then known as 4x

    By Albert Bedford (09/01/2012)
  • No 45 is Pam Rattenbury my sister

    By T. Rattenbury (07/01/2012)
  • Number 52 is my good friend Peter Sloper.

    By Jannet English (06/01/2012)
  • I pretty sure the Number 46 on this page is not my sister Pat Pattle but me Jean. No 47 is my friend Kay Pidoux, Kay moved to New Zealand in the sixties. Love seeing these pics.

By Jean Rowe (née Pattle) (31/12/2011)
  • Re. Alfie Bartley. Sadly I have to tell you that Alfie died many years ago in a car crash. It happened not long after he and Maureen moved to Devon.

    By Christine Hutchings (29/12/2011)
  • No 46 on this page is Pat Pattle

    By Christine Hutchings (27/12/2011)
  • No 13 on page 9 is not Gregg Smith as he was the same age as my husband and had left Laindon High Road school the year I started there

    By Christine Hutchings (26/12/2011)
  • Re. Alfie Bartley. Alfie and I served an apprenticeship at the Ford Motor Co. Ltd., Dagenham. I was Best Man at his wedding to Maureen (nee Perry). He left Ford’s and joined the Police Force. We continued to meet on many occasions but lost contact in the 1960’s. The last time I saw him was in a cafe on the A127. I would so much love and enjoy meeting with them again. If anyone can help to put us in contact again I would be most grateful. I can also be contacted via benfleethistory.org.uk Thank you.

    By Ronnie Pigram. (25/12/2011)
  • OOh aye lass, sure is, thanks for clearing that up Nina. I didn’t know him very well, just to pass the time of day with was about all. Maureen was in my class throughout our school days, I hope they are both ok.

    By Ken Page (22/12/2011)
  • I may well be very wrong but, wasn’t it Alfie Bartlett not Bartley? I gave both him and his very pregnant wife Maureen [nee Perry] a lift home up the Crown Hill just a couple of days before leaving for Oz. I have heard that poor Alfie died years ago in a car crash, true/false, anyone know?

    No. 8 Alan Chapman?

    By Ken Page (21/12/2011)
  • Hi Ken. Definitely Bartley. His family lived in Devonshire Road not far from me. His sister Linda and I were in the same class. I also knew his wife Maureen Perry, she was the half sister of Ronny Graves who was a good mate of my brother Dennis. Complicated, Ay What!

    By Nina Humphrey(née Burton) (21/12/2011)
  • Sorry peeps, being in the same form as Peter Sloper and my desk being net to his and Micky Pratt, I recon I have it spot on. As I have said, Peter was our milkie and often had a chat.

    By Eddie Lewis (20/12/2011)
  • Think Gloria is correct Peter Sloper is more likely to be No 31 on page 2 and 52 on page 9 is probably his elder brother ? John. Also No. 41 is not Nick Flashman (now deceased) as it is a girl but I cannot recall a name for her.

    By Ann Rugg (19/12/2011)
  • The Sloper Brothers. John was born 1941 and Peter 1942. I think that’s John on Page 9. No. 52. and Peter is on Page 2. No. 31 (I recognised him).

By Nina Humphrey (née Burton) (17/12/2011)
  • 53 is Mike Pratt not Platt.

    By Ken Page (17/12/2011)
  • Page 9 No 42 is Veronica Freeman

    By Ann Rugg (17/12/2011)
  • Hmmm, were both there, just can’t remember Peter’s brothers name, could have been John, perhaps someone else can sort it, Gloria. I know they both worked as milkies after school, in fact Peter was our milkie, was the firm Whife n Sloper.

    By Eddie Lewis (16/12/2011)
  • Just as a matter of interest Gloria, there is a piece on UTube with Peter with an old milk van at a car show from the 50s.

    By Eddie Lewis (16/12/2011)
  • Eddie, Sorry mate but have a look at page 2 No. 31 I think that might be Peter Sloper, but did he have a brother that may have been there?

    By Gloria Sewell (15/12/2011)
