The day I passed my riding Test

Setting the trend

Self after having just passed the riding test at Warrior Square testing office, Southend, taken in May 1960. Check out the trendy motor cycle gear I’m wearing, it was called the ‘Black Prince’ outfit, made of butyl rubbery stuff, heavy as hell completely waterproof but in the cold weather it could just about stand up on its own. Also note the classy crash helmet an Everoak corker, I soon ditched that and bought one of the new Jet style helmets that covered the ears and offered much better protection.

Bike was a 1954 Francis Barnett 225cc two stroke nice to ride but very slow, only about 55mph flat out. The lass in the background is Maureen Webb who became my brother’s wife.
