  • After leaving school, I started work for Basildon Development Corporation, in Gifford House and stayed there for 11 fairly awful years. In that time one of the jobs I worked on was the production of quite a lot of the working drawings for Laindon Main Centre, as it was called. The only real highlight was when the tower crane collapsed; falling straight along the ground floor service road. Fortunately there were no casualties.

  • I still have a collection of photos and even postcards of the original shops that were ripped down to build that ugly new block. Now I understand, there are what just 7 shops still open there? I also have a jigsaw I had made, featuring the shops at Townsends corner, showing Kentex first and towards Fortune of War, St. Nicholas Church, Laindon High Road School, and Fortune of War pub.

We would love to see the photographs and if possible publish them on the site. Editor
