The Lipscomb Family

By Neville Andrews

I wonder if anyone can remember the Lipscomb Family?  They lived in Bridge Street.  Ernest Lipscomb and his wife had three children Ernie, Bob & Clarice.
When Bob married Rose, he built his own house next to his parents (He was a builder by trade) and they had a daughter Robina.
Clarice married Gerald Andrews in 1946 (They are my parents) and Bob and Gerald built an extension to the original family home for them to live in.  My Sister Elaine was born in 1958 and the family moved from there in 1959 the year before I was born.
There doesn't seem to be much information on web sites about Bridge Street, yet I know it existed as I carried out a geography project for my CSE's on the Basildon and the plotlands in the 1970s and visited it many times with my parents.

I was at Langdon Hills Primary school with Robina and we used to play after school. I have a 1" square photo taken of me in her garden holding a doll. About 4 or 5 years ago I made contact with her and she too still has the same copy of that photo. We met up several times but I have not seen or heard from her for about 2 years. I will try and reestablish contact with her as she was living in Great Leighs area of Chelmsford and will let her know of this website and enquiries.

Following a visit to Essex Record Office at Chelmsford I discovered there was a Bridge Avenue and a Bridge Road just south of the railway. The 1935 Electoral Register shows Ernest Joseph and Emma Anna Lipscomb living at “Peacehaven” Bridge Avenue. This entry is repeated on the 1945 Register with the addition of Rose Ivy and Robert C Lipscomb living next door in “Endeavour”, Bridge Avenue.

Editor: I have added a section of map that shows the location of Bridge Avenue and Bridge Road.

Robina Lipscomb can be found sitting down the front in the girls section of the 1958 Laindon High Road School photo.

I have been looking at the OS map of 1939 and can find a Bridge Avenue on the South side of the railway line accessed from the second railway bridge and Berry Lane. The next road from the railway was Berry Drive.

I hope this is helpful
