Hopefully a number of you might have read the article on the ‘Love Laindon’ project, and if you take a walk down to the centre you will see that work has already started.

Clare Hogg is a member of the Manor Mission and is the instigator of the idea and has been working tirelessly in the back ground enthusing as many people and groups as possible to help out in smartening the shopping centre up. The Disability Inclusion Society (D.I.S.) is one of these groups and they have already started to paint murals on the blue boarding. The idea is that these paintings are going to depict the Old Laindon High Road. If you would like to know more about them I suggest you log onto their web site www.dis4u.co.uk.

Below are some of the jobs that the project group believes will help liven the centre up: –

  •  Paint blue hoarding.
  • Paint closed shop fronts (those with either boarding or metal shutters).
  • Paint the pillars.
  • Paint outside walls of shopping centre seen from the dual carriageway.
  • Clean the centre’s welcome sign.
  • Collect up rubbish.
  • Clean Pavements
  • Redecorate toilet block
  • Work on the various flower/shrub beds
  • Car Park – fill pot holes
  • Etc, etc

The developers have given the project group access to the Centre Shop  which will be used for volunteers to sign up, a place to pop in for prayer, advertising community events etc.

There is talk that four new shops will be opening up in the very near future. One has already opened as a general shop (Heley’s) It is understood that two of the others will be a cafe and a Chinese take away.
