The Dukes Head

It is believed that the Dukes Head is the oldest public house in the old parish of Laindon.

This is as it looks in 2011 having been updated as most public houses have been to cater for current tastes.

Dukes Head

This is as it looked when the area was a farming community.

It is believed that the Dukes Head is the oldest public house in the old parish of Laindon.  One of the earliest records has the Inn being occupied by Hannah Watson in 1769 and from the St Nicholas Church register of 1785 we learn that John Blake, a lodger, probably a traveller passing through the area, dying of “Smallpox” at the inn being buried on the 13th June.

  • Personally, I can’t recall there being a Dukes Head in Laindon, so where is this please? I know the bottom picture looks so much what to me was once The Crown on Langdon Hills and passed just yesterday, 2nd April 2011. Thank you.

The Dukes Head is in Laindon Common Road which is at the Northern extremity of the old Parish of Laindon
